Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission President Veasna Kuonno Neang will preside at the event. Attendance at the site will be by invitation only based on current local COVID-19 guidelines. It will be the Church’s first temple in the country.

The single-story temple of approximately 10,000 square feet will be built on a 3.16-acre site located on Russian Confederation Street, between the Cambodia Institute of Technology and the Institute of Foreign Languages near the Royal University of Phnom Penh. The temple site will be shared with an ancillary building.

The temple in Cambodia’s capital city was announced in October 2018 by Church President Russell M. Nelson. During his first visit to Cambodia in November 2019, President Russell M. Nelson unveiled an artist’s rendering of the Phnom Penh Cambodia Temple. “Isn’t that beautiful?” President Nelson said during the unveiling. The audience responded with an audible gasp. He said, “Preparation of the temple includes members of your family. Your preparation of yourself will bless the members of your family.” He urged Latter-day Saints in Cambodia to understand the temple recommend interview questions and become worthy to hold a temple recommend. “I am very optimistic about the future of Cambodia,” the prophet said as he concluded his remarks.

Cambodia is home to more than 15,000 Latter-day Saints and approximately 30 congregations. Newsroom will have coverage of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Each temple is considered a “house of the Lord” where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.
