Students, faculty, and local dignitaries gathered at Anlong Vil Primary School in Battambang to mark the handover of two reconstructed classroom buildings, two modernized bathroom facilities, and a new waste incinerator constructed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The renovated buildings replace older facilities that had significant structural and hygiene problems and were exposed to frequent flooding during the rainy season.
As local dignitaries and Sister Kathryn Schmidt and Elder Kenneth Schmidt, humanitarian missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, arrived on the day of the handover ceremony, students lined the driveway applauding, cheering, and singing songs in unison. Most students were dressed in a white shirt and black pants of the school uniform, but a few had an additional green shawl, signifying their honored role in the celebration of their renovated school buildings. Under a pink and white tent, the honored guests were offered fresh coconut juice and a seat of honor at the front of the assembled students, faculty, and staff. The meeting began by singing the national anthem. Sophathearann Chea, a teacher at the school, then welcomed everyone to the ceremony.
“This is a wonderful day for our school,” said Principal Sameth Sum. “We have been under construction for six months, but now we have new classrooms, bathrooms, and an incinerator. We will do our best to teach the students and empower them with knowledge.”
“We didn’t have anyone to help us,” said District Governor Channthara Neang, “but The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stepped in. We ask the students and teachers to help maintain the renovated buildings. Students, heed to your parents and teachers to further your education.”
Chansophea Reath, the President of the Association of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cambodia, said, “Part of our Church’s mission is to help foster education and health. We are happy that the old school buildings have been replaced. It is a great atmosphere for the school and a good place to study.”
The District Education Deputy Director Vannrith Po thanked the Church for their help with this project and with many other projects that the Church has supported, “Education will prepare you for the future,” he said.
Elder Schmidt concluded the event saying, “We are so thankful for the education that goes on here. These buildings will be a place of learning for many years to come. You can help each other, your village, your community, and your country.” In addition to certificates of appreciation, Church representatives were presented with fruit baskets and scarves as a gesture of gratitude.
