On the bright morning of January 16, 2024 in the Koas Krala District of Battambang Province, the students and faculty of Preah Phos Secondary School gathered for a handover ceremony for the new library and renovated office and storage room added to their school by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The students stood and applauded with gratitude to the Church for the renovated facilities.

With these renovations, the school can now open all five classrooms for instruction, decreasing class sizes from 61 to 37. Previously, some classrooms were used for storage and office space. The Church also furnished the new library with tables, books, and glass windows to protect potential future computer equipment from dust. As an unexpected bonus, the Church contractor commissioned an artist to paint beautiful murals in the library including an illustrated world map, an expansive depiction of the cosmos, and an illustrated map of Cambodia. The Church also constructed a waste incinerator for the school.

Elder Kenneth Schmidt, a humanitarian missionary who, along with his companion Sister Kathryn Schmidt, co-managed the project, stood and graciously acknowledged the students for their applause. “The real applause is for you,” he said. “It is for you, your teachers, the principal, and the government officials that helped make it all possible.” He counseled them to take advantage of the renovated learning space. “Listen to your teachers,” he said. “I was a teacher too. I know they can be annoying, but this is the start of a long life, a long life of learning, so that you can help your country.”

Chubo Tan, a local police officer, reminded the students of their village standards. He stood in front of a large blue sign that outlined the seven characteristics of a safe village. The students were familiar with the standards and were able to answer in unison to many of his questions.
