Relief Efforts Continue as Flood Victims in Siem Reap Cambodia Receive Help

Relief efforts from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continue as flood victims in the Province of Siem Reap, Cambodia receive help

Vice Governor of Siem Reap, Sophea You, Director of Cult and Religion, Bunna Van, and the Director of Education, Bunna Ly, met with humanitarian missionaries and leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 24, 2022, to discuss the needs of the people in the Siem Reap area.

The Vice Governor expressed her appreciation for the current food donation to help 500 families who are victims of flooding, and recognized the Church for its years of service in Siem Reap.  She noted that the Church has been helping with projects in the area since 2006 and has been involved in more than 18 different projects, including water wells, food donations, equipment to hospitals, and providing COVID equipment and supplies.

The Vice Governor discussed the extensive damage to the flooded rice and plantain fields, chicken farms, and flooded schools and villages.  She advised that she and her administration would support the Church in whatever they needed in their efforts to help those who are suffering. The two parties are in discussion about potential education projects in the future.

Samnang Sea, president of The Association for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Cambodia, said, “Try us, we are different from other NGOs.  Missionaries will leave after their voluntary service, but the Church is here to stay and help people.”  He also expressed his appreciation for the government leaders in organizing and distributing the food and supplies to the families in most need of assistance.

The meeting ended with a presentation of a framed certificate of appreciation by Vice Governor Sophea You to The Association of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was received by Elder and Sister Smith, one of the humanitarian missionary couples serving in Cambodia.

The donation from the Church in the Siem Reap Province is the second relief project to take place in October 2022.  Many families throughout Cambodia have experienced flooding in the past months.  The Church made a similar donation in the province of Kampong Thom earlier in the month. Learn more.
