On December 19, 2023, government officials and representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered at Kampong Cham Provincial Headquarters to witness the arrival of two neon-yellow ambulances donated by the Church to the Prey Chhor Referral Hospital and Cheung Prey Referral Hospital. These new ambulances will help many patients in the Kampong Cham Province to be more easily transported to receive the best care available.
Kampong Cham Governor Un Chanda presented Chansophea Reath, President of The Association of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cambodia, with an oversized car key and a certificate of appreciation for the donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Vice Governor Srey Sopheak of Kampong Cham province and administrators of Prey Chhor Referral Hospital and Cheung Prey Referral Hospital also attended the event.
The new ambulances will bolster vital transport links between communities and the network of healthcare facilities that serve Kampong Cham Province. The Prey Chhor Referral Hospital, located in Kampong Cham city, transports over 12,000 patients each year from villages to local health centers, provincial health centers, and occasionally to Phnom Penh hospitals almost 100 kilometers away. Cheung Prey Referral Hospital, located in rural Prey Chhor District, transports over 500 patients a year to other facilities, and its old ambulance had over 1,000,000 km on its odometer.
The donation of ambulances to Kampong Chong province is part of the Cambodia Health Improvement Effort (CHIE), which provides humanitarian aid for Cambodia people in need. Working in collaboration with government and healthcare leaders, CHIE provides training, equipment, and construction projects. The program was initiated in 2018 by the Asia Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Provincial officials and administrators of both hospitals expressed gratitude for the new ambulances donated by the Church. They thanked the Church for the generous aid provided in previous humanitarian projects in the province. “Our ambulances were so old they were always breaking down and we weren’t able to service the patients well,” said Sarak Mony, the Vice Director of Kampong Cham Provincial Health Department. “These new ambulances will be a great addition.”
